Egypt Display at Museum

We went to a special exhibit about Egypt at the Natural History Museum. It was incredible what people from that time period could do. The below is a replica of a chamber

inside of a tomb. It was so colorful. They used natural colors and created the first synthetic colors such as blue and green.

Their belief in different God’s was a big part of their culture. It was a way to try and make nature manageable by making things in nature Gods and then give them offerings to appease them. This whole display isle was full of different statues of their God’s. I like the lion one.

The Rosetta Stone allowed scientist to finally decipher Egyptian writing. The stone had the same passage but written in three different languages, Egyptian, Ancient Greek, and Demotic. Egyptian hieroglyphs pictures could represent the actual image of what it was or a letter sound.

This was a replica of a temple. It had three courtyards and only the priests and the pharaoh could go in the last two. It also had a massive bread making facility next to it to make bread for offerings.

This is an offering table

This is a 135 year old plaster cast replica of a wall relief found in a Karnak temple. It shows Seti l in a his chariot during a military campaign to Palestine. The colors are projected onto it to show what it would have looked like back then.

Both male and female Egyptians wore wigs. This was a huge comb.

This gold necklace had such fine strands . It’s hard to see how they could have produced something like this.

Coffin for the overseer of the granary.

This is a book of the dead for king Ramesii. it was 27 yards long. It depicted the journey to the afterlife and included all the spells and things needed to get past all the tests.

The more elaborate mummy coffins were at the end of the tour.

The boys were a little afraid to go see mummies. They are always the monsters in the movies they watch such as in Scooby Doo. It took a lot fo convincing that the mummies wouldn’t come to life and chase them.

Link asked if this was a real mummy with somebody dead inside and just stared at it for a long time.

Ancient Crocodile. It seemed to fit the Egyptian theme. We had to see the dinosaurs before leaving.
