Southern Utah Trip 2020: Mossy Cave
We started heading towards Escalante but stopped at the Mossy Cave trail first. I didn’t know what to expect, but it had gotten 5 star reviews. Immediately I could see why. The trail was gorgeous with the red rock formations, a stream, and bridges.
We continued on and discovered that the trail led to a beautiful waterfall.
There were also some amazing arch formations on the hill above the waterfall that people were climbing too
We went and explored the top of the waterfall
This is the stream above the waterfall.
We also went to the bottom of the waterfall. I even was able to go behind the waterfall.
I learned that the pioneers made the stream with picks and shovels in 1890 it to bring water to the towns below. It took a long time to build and was quite a feat.
Lastly, we took the trail to the Mossy Cave. It was just an overhang where water was dripping from the rocks in the ceiling and moss was growing on the rocks. In the winter is when it is really spectacular due to the icicles that form from the dripping water.
