Southern Utah Trip 2020: Mammoth Cave
Next we went to see Mammoth Cave, which was made from lava. They’re called lava tubes.
We were surprised that the entrances to the tubes were just holes in the ground.
We entered through the small hole and explored a tube that went back a bit and dead ended
Then we checked out the lower bigger area. You can see the small entrance where light is coming in above John’s head and the lava tube we explored off to the right.
The main big tube was gated off to protect the bats in that section
We climbed out the large, rocky back opening.
At the large, rocky back opening we found another slit opening to a long lava tube. A mother and her daughters were trying to explore it, but they hadn’t brought flashlights and the girls were afraid, so we shared our lights with them as we walked to the back of the long dark tube.
There was also a trail to other lava tubes. We were always surprised to see the holes in the ground and then look in them to find large tubes and caves. We didn’t go see all the tubes because it was hard to crawl around in them.
As we were leaving Dixie Forest and heading to Bryce, I saw a huge valley filled with lava flow.
