The family moved to Arkansas. I remember the green woods with the big ferns. The first summer the family lived in a great big army tent while dad built some sort of two story home. Later, dad bought 40 acres and proceeded to build a regular home, which he never finished.

4th Grade Age 9
First time with 4th grade. I had to take it twice because I had chicken pox and was burned in a fire. Stayed home alone while mother worked up the hill at a nursing home. We were living in the barn/shed at the time. Dad closed it in and used a potbelly stove in the living room and a wood cook stove in the kitchen. While home alone I let the fire burn down to coals and I was cold. I put some wood in the old potbelly stove and it didn’t start right away so I threw some kerosene in. My face burned all over as well as my right arm. My eyebrows were burned off, but it didn’t burn my hair because I had just washed my hair. I was afraid so I went to the outhouse, and then I put on my beautiful velvet coat mother had made for me. I walked up the valley, and then took the trail up the hill to the nursing home. Mother put salve on my face and arm. She was afraid I was going to be scarred. Later that night I got a priesthood blessing from dad. At that time the branch, 15-20 members, were still meeting on the second story of the music store, and that was where I got my blessing. My arm was the only thing that scarred, about a quarter size. So that was why I was out of school and had to take 4th grade again.
Trip to Arizona
Below: Taken in Arizona when I was 8. Mom, Sidney, Lewis and I went from Arkansas to Arizona. Caressa married Dick (Richard ) when she was 17 and Mom was trying to get it annulled. But was advised by church leaders not to because Caress would just do it again when she was 18. Mother left me for the day with some people she knew. We went to a lake and they took my picture. I really liked the people and especially the park and the lake. A really nice place I wasn’t used to being at and it impressed me as being a nice place to be.
Dick turned out to be a real jerk, not feeding Caressa or even their children. Dad hated him.
1952-1953
Age 10 4th Grade
4th Grade. Took it twice. In my second year of 4th grade I had a wonderful teacher named Stephanie that was super nice to me. There were class presidents, four in one year. I was elected to be the 3rd one, which was shocking because I was super shy and poor. I was also a second time 4th grader which didn’t help my self confidence. Tuck Chaffey was a good friend (and was Pauls friend later in high school). Later he married the daughter of the Daisy air rifle president.
At valentines day a boy, Billy Joe, who was blond and cute, gave me a big heart shape box of candy. But then I got sick for awhile and when I came back to school, one of the girls in the class had chased him and I lost a boyfriend.
1953-1954
5th Grade 11 Years Old
Fifth grade. Mother and I added the rhinestones to the sweater. Everyone oowd and awwd over my sweater. Scarves were very much the rage.
In grade school I got a hair perm, and it frizzed and stuck straight up and straight up. It was awful and refused to get another one for years and years.
1954 – 1955
6th Grade Age 12
Most likely 6th grade.
