Moab!!!

John M. came for a visit. I took him to Moab to see all the amazing sites there. I drove the motorhome and he drove the jeep with the bikes. We had taken off the top on the jeep and he froze when we went over some mountains that still had snow and it was pouring rain. It was miserable 🙁 but he liked the views.
When we got close to Moab it was easier to appreciate the top and doors being off the jeep, but it was still cold for a couple of days. We bundled up whenever we drove places. When it got warm, it was great having the top off.
We didn’t get into Moab until after dinner time so all the BLM sites were taken. We stayed at the campground that gives half off discounts to military. It only cost 20 dollars a night.
This is the view in front of the camper. I love this spot. It is very private, green, and shady.
The next morning we went to look for a BLM site. They go fast. We eventually found a great one, but it was 10 minutes from Moab. It was next to the Colorado River with beautiful cliffs behind and in front.
This is the back view of our beautiful site. We had such a good site that the camp host wanted it after we were done.
Above: John is a pyromaniac. I thought for sure he’d burn down the dry grass next to our fire pit. He delighted in watching sticks fall out of the fire onto the ground.

Arches National Park

We decided to go to Arches on a Thursday so we could avoid the weekend crowd. It didn’t work. It was still packed.
Above: We went on a trail that I hadn’t been on before. The beginning of the trail went through these walls of rock. An impressive way to start.

This was the first arch John got to see up close. He was impressed.
I thought I had never been on this trail until I saw this sand hill. We came here with the Pearson’s when John was a teen. He recognized the place. We were in a hurry with the Pearsons though, so we didn’t walk very far on the trail. John and I got to see several things I hadn’t seen before.
Landscape Arch: This is the widest spanned arch in the world. You can see where a chunk fell off on the right. Tourists heard it cracking and then a chunk fell. They had to close the trail when it happened. We couldn’t get any closer than this. It is a pretty thin arch.
After the Landscape Arch we had to climb this steep fin. It was a little scary because towards the top it was thin with deep ravines on each side.
John is waiting our turn watching the other people try to climb up. Several older people had to turn back.
It was worth the climb when we came to this beautiful arch with an amazing view!
This is the next arch we came to. It is called Navajo Arch. It’s like a tunnel.
After we hike we went to the large arches by the road. Love the rock formations next to this arch.

Biking in Moab

We started our bike ride at the Colorado River park bridge.
We rode on this trail next to the cliff and river.
We stopped at a huge pile of rocks.

Monday the 20th

Drive up to dead horse point. saw views. Went to Canyonlands national park. Island in the sky. Drove down a cliff road on switchbacks. Hypervenilated. John covered his head or turned away. He said that the rock wall was interesting.i was so tense and stressed. After down only a few high cliffs by Colorado River. Saw point on movie selma and Louise where went over cliff. And bottom of dead horse point rectangle in the sky.

After got back went to get ice cream. raspberry and sweet cream like cake mix and dirt and worms which was crushed area cookie and watched a movie in the Rv

Fiery Furnace 2

Tuesday 21 We showed Nathan and Dad pictures of Fiery Furnace and told them how amazing it was and they wanted to try it. John and I were both excited to do it again. We explored some canyons that we didn’t see the last time and found 3 arches in three different canyons.

Me, holding up the arch.
John liked this tree.
A canyon we didn’t see on the last hike.

The canyon ended at this arch.
Looking out from the end of the canyon through the fins
Lots of interesting rock structures.
A pot hole filled with water.
The skull arch
We found this pool of water at the end of a new canyon.

Opening to a cave like structure.
Took a wrong path and climbed up this pile of rocks trying to find the path. It had a drop off at the end that was hard to get down but ended up back on the path.
Huge arch at the end of another canyon we didn’t explore the first time.
Going out of the canyon where the arch was.
We had to find shelter when a storm kicked in. It got really windy and blew sand in our faces and then it rained.
Then it hailed.
Stairs built in the 1950’s.They don’t make stairs anymore in National Parks like this.
More stairs made in the 1950’s.
Two huge stones fell together. So cool.

It rained all night, and more was expected. Dad and Nathan went towards Capital Reef. They got a cabin for the night for 50 dollars. John and I stayed at the Moab campground waiting out the weather because it would be miserable to drive in an open jeep and John was getting a cough.

During what was supposed to be a clear time period, John and I went for a bike ride on the beautiful Moab town trail that goes by the stream, parks, and amazing eclectic homes. It started to rain and then pour so we sought shelter at a restaurant and got some deep fried food and hot chocolate. The bike ride in the rain didn’t help John’s cough, but it was fun.
