Friendship Trail, Kailua Trunk of Treat, District Meeting Art

Oct 24

This morning we worked together calling, emailing, and texting people trying to make appointments to meet them. We were going with the Clark’s on Thursday to visit people. We won’t be in the Kailua ward in January because of the time changes. The YSA Branch will be at the same time. So we are trying to turn it over to the Kailua MLS missionaries, the Clarks, and then they can call us if they need to get on base to visit someone.

We went for a hike at the Friendship Trail for our exercise. It was an easy, but shaded, beautiful hike with a great view at the top. The Friendship Trail was created in one of the first purposely created interracial neighborhood in the US. The property was divided into 87 lots and were distributed in a racial/ethnic lottery. The garden is 72 years old

Trail covered in roots

Sit and enjoy the view of the bay

Vines that take over. They even go up trees. We see lots of forests of trees covered in these vines.

Cook Pine, New Caledonia Pine. The pine needles are unusual. They are thick, long, and feathery looking

Made it to the top. Great view of the bay. Could see all the way from Kaneohe on the left to the base on the right (see video)

Bamboo forests

Giant African Snail. They get really big

After our walk we went to District Meeting at 10. There was a new district leader and he did a great job with training. He had them look up two scriptures to explain to an investigator an answer to a question they might ask. One was “Why are families important.” After that they all drew pictures of Book of Mormon stories. John drew the Liahona on the board, I drew the destructions in 3rd Nephi. The girls were the best artists, and some of the guys drawings were funny.

John’s drawing on the right and companionship goals on the left. The top number is their goal from last week. The middle is what they actually achieved and the bottom is their goals for next week. The topics are: new friend, teach lesson, investigator to sacrament, baptism date, baptism and confirmation, new member at sacrament

I had to look up images online to draw mine

In the afternoon I made several batches of corn bread muffins for the Kailua Trunk or Treat. We got there a half hour early to set up the fishing booth we were doing with the Clarks and found a beautifully decorated cultural hall and a frantic decorator trying to finish things up. I asked if I could help. We hung balloons and toxic waste tape and then I went to help set up the fishing booth. Sister Clark had brought the plastic tablecloth and the cut out fishes I had recommended from Amazon. They attached the tablecloth between our two cars and then taped the fishes to it. They decorated around it with body boards, snorkel gear and grass mat. Also had a net. They got some reeds that made great fishing poles.

I had gotten a box of great prizes to attach to the clips when kids threw their lines over into the “pond”. Sister Clark and I sat in the back on padded chairs and attached the prizes and gave a tug. The guys were up from helping the kids with the poles. There were a lot of people at the event and we probably should have been going around meeting them but I’m glad we did this instead because I was tired after a busy day.

After setting up our booth we went and got chili. There was a lot of different kinds. They also had cheese and sourcream and chips to go on them. I was glad I had brought extra cornbread bread because they ran short of that. After eating, I checked out the crafts the kids got to do in the halls. The youth were in charge of helping the kids with them. I also looked at the amazing trunks and games that were out in the parking lot. It was probably one of the best Trunk or Treats I’ve ever been to.
