Petrified Sand Dunes

Moki Marbles

There were lots of Moki Marbles in the petrified sand dunes. You can see them laying around in the pictures below or getting ready to pop out out of the stone. They are formed from iron minerals percolated from groundwater. The iron turns into a hard ball, but as the softer sandstone surrounding them is weathered, the iron deposits start popping out of the stone.

Above: On some of the red sandstone you could see what looked like black scorched rock. We wondered if that was from the volcano.

Snow Canyon is covered in lava flow. The cinder cone of the volcano is also one of the hiking trails. You can see Snow Canyon State Park in the background on the right.

We walked to lava flow trail and found three lava tubes. We didn’t bring flashlights or we would have gone deep into the caves. I love the pictures of Siara and the boys. Haha
