St. George: Red Cliff Desert Hike

While Siara and Nate was celebrating their 10th anniversary trip, I was going to pick up the kids from Grandpa Martin in St George. I made reservations to stay a couple of nights there, then they all got sick and came home early from Las Vegas. I couldn’t cancel the reservations, so John and I and the kids drove down to St. George for a few days. The coughed the whole trip, but didn’t have a fever so it was just a cold. We stayed at a Best Western hotel for one night. The room had three beds, but it was still hard to get the kids to go to sleep. Best Western had a great breakfast bar though. After checking out, we went hiking at Pioneer Park in the Red Cliff Deseret Reserve. It had beautiful, fun rock formations. The kids loved it.

He made it!

Locke climbed up high and Remi and Link tried to follow.

Locke climbing again. He is good at it. He kept trying until he made it.

The Cavern

The Scout Cave

The Scout Cave is an old pioneer shelter built between two rocks. There was a wood ceiling over th two rocks that had also been cemented and you could walk on it when you went to the top. There was also a fireplace in the cave and a chimney and vent at the top. Scouts used the cave for camping so they call it Scout Cave.

The top of the Scout Cave. You can see the cement roof and chimney. Also there was a circle fire area, probably for parties. Also a little overhang building where the path up was built.

The Narrows

The Narrows was short, but there was a long crack that I found out later that kids and skinny adults could go up. It looked too narrow to me so we didn’t try, but now I wish we had.

Dixie Rock

We climbed to the top of the Iconic landmark, Dixie Rock. First we had to climb up some man-made stairs in the rock, and then we crossed a bridge to get to it.

Spectacular views of St. George at the top.

The kids are sitting on metal stakes that I think were used to rappel and paint Dixie Rock. Or they were the bones of a barrier so kids didn’t too close to the edge. It made me nervous being up there with the kids, especially Remi. So I didn’t let them explore it much. I had to carry Remi down kicking and crying because she didn’t want to leave. Stubborn 3 year olds..
