Camping: Dixie National Forest

Siara and Nate and the kids went camping down south at Dixie National Forest. They went with some friends: Emily & Abe, and Caitlyn and her family. I house-sat for them while they were gone.

Fishing at Navajo Lake

They didn’t catch anything but a guy next to them was catching lots. They tried to get him to share his secret. He did give them one of the rainbow trouts he had caught. Siara scaled it and cut it up and cooked it.

Look at that face.

Dixie National Forest is in volcano country. There were piles of sharp volcano rock. There were also lava tunnel caves that they explored. Fun!! (They didn’t get any pictures of this part, so I got some pictures from http://roadslesstraveled.us/dixie-forest-utah/)

While they were gone…

While they were gone, I milked the goats, collected the eggs, and fed the animals. It was interesting learning how to milk a goat. Nate built a milking stand and you give them grain to eat while you milk. The goats were hard to herd where you wanted them though. They had a pen for the girls and one for the boys, and all of them have to be in their pens before milking or the other goats steal the grain. Willow was the goat that needed milking. If she ran out of grain while milking, she would kick over the bucket of milk. She also kept trying to steal Corvo’s food. She likes to eat

Corvo loves eating his food with goat milk, so he would wait to eat until the milking was done and then he’d gobble it all down. Corvo even ate the goat’s food. I think he thinks he’s part of the herd. He and Maverick, the older male goat, have fun playing together. Irene and her husband came a couple of nights and milked Willow. Irene’s husband likes goat milk

I also did my first video for my class while they were gone. It was nice having it so quiet while trying to record stuff. It was a 30 second introduction video. Thirty seconds was a lot shorter than I realized. I had to edit a lot of stuff out.

Finally, after getting my homework done, I got to have fun. I cleared out another section in the trees. The trees are so full of dried, dead branches and weeds. It sure looked beautiful when it was done. John came over and mowed. He loved trying the riding mower. We did some weed eating too.

This is what it looked like before clearing it out. Weeds and dead branches everywhere.
While cleaning out the weeds I found a huge nest of eggs. The chickens were trying to hatch some baby chicks.
I’ve also been working on sorting and bringing over our food storage. Siara’s basement has the perfect place for food storage. I’m trying to get all the food storage stocked up, up to date, and enough for both our families.
I also stocked some shelves with canned goods from case lot sales.
