The Great Salt Lake

I took the kids to the Salt Lake State Park. I’d never been there before. They had a small visitor center (the building behind the boys) with information about the lake. They also had a display of brine shrimp–the only thing that lives in the lake. We only looked at the brine shrimp. The kids wanted to get out to the water.

We walked out onto this sandbar and the kids went wading.
On this side of the sandbar the water was clear and calm, unless disturbed by walking in it.

The kids feet would sink in the sandy sludge.
The kids had fun throwing the black, sandy sludge. Locke got first hand experience with the salt in the water when it got in an owie.
On this side of the sand bar there were waves.
People had made piles of rocks on these concrete slab, so the boys added to it.
Here is Locke’s rock tower.
The little pile is Link’s rock tower.
What a beautiful view, but parts of the beach weren’t as beautiful. The sludge from the dead brine shrimp can get really smelly and buggy in the summer. There were parts of the beach that already were kind of gross looking and smelling, but other parts that were beautiful, like this.
The state park also had a dock and a launch ramp. We got to see someone on a paddleboard launching from the dock into the man-made bay. The guy on the paddleboard said that people do paddle sports on the lake, but you don’t want to fall in because you would get all crusty with salt.
The state park also was a marina for sail boats. You can see a little bit of it in this photo. Motorboat engines get corroded in the salt so only sail boats go on the Salt Lake.

Black Rock

After checking out the state park, we went to the Black Rock that was just down the road. The kids had a ball rock climbing and finding little caves in the rock.

Link would do whatever Locke did. I had to keep a close eye on him to make sure he didn’t do anything dangerous. It was exhausting, but he doesn’t have the balance or motorskills that Locke does–not yet.
This is one of the small caves in the Black Rock. There were several others too.
Locke did not want to go in to this one. I had to give him my phone flashlight to convince him to look in it.
There were lots of different sized holes in the Black Rock.
Tada!
Locke and Link found a stink bug. They have gotten really brave about picking up bugs.
Locke found a crevasse to climb through.
Here he is on the other side of it.

He climbed through the crevasse several times. Link wanted to do it too. I had to go around to the other side to make sure he didn’t slip down the edge.

Here they are on the other side of the crevasse. It’s that thin dark area between the rocks.
